Flock of Flutes in concert
3491 Mount Diablo Blvd,,
Lafayette
The Lafayette Library will host an afternoon concert featuring two ensembles that highlight music’s storytelling power. The Cello Ensemble, directed by Stephen Evans, opens the program with works spanning centuries and styles, including Pachelbel’s Canon, the Welsh folk song Song of the Birds, Cohen’s Hallelujah, and music from How to Train Your Dragon.
Following the cellists, Flock of Flutes, a 38-member flute choir directed by Monica Williams, presents a program centered on storytelling through music. Using a wide range of flutes—from contrabass to piccolo—the group performs pieces inspired by folklore, nature, science, and rhythm. Highlights include Handel’s Bourrée from Royal Fireworks Suite, Pucihar’s illustrated Luna’s Magic Flute, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Cohen’s Blue Shift, Red Shift, Kaempfert’s A Swinging Safari, and Lowe’s Simple Songs for Simple Swains. The concert also features guest vocalist Natalie Aires performing Michael Davis’s comedic Bird Song.
The program celebrates the imaginative and emotional power of live music, inviting audiences to experience stories told through sound.
