Time:
Noon to 4pm
Location:
Plaza Ignacio Park
550 Henrietta St.,
Martinez

The Martinez Arts Association (MAA) is preparing for Dia de los Muertos on Saturday, November 1, from noon to 4pm at Plaza Ignacio Park, located at 550 Henrietta Street in Martinez.

This is a free cultural event with altars created by members of the community to honor loved ones who have passed. The event is family-friendly and will feature music and Aztec dancers.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1st and 2nd to honor and remember deceased loved ones. Families create colorful altars with photos, candles, marigolds, and favorite foods to welcome the spirits back for a brief reunion. It’s a joyful celebration of life and death

The public is invited to create an altar in remembrance of someone they’ve lost.

To participate, please submit an application by October 24. A community altar will be at the center of the event, and participants are invited to bring a photo or object to honor a loved one who has passed away.

There will also be a free workshop to create nicho boxes (small altars) at the Martinez Library on Saturday October 25 from 1-3pm. Materials will be provided.

Founded in 1968, MAA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts and art education in the community. Proceeds from sponsorships, membership dues, donations and Art in the Park help fund scholarships for graduating seniors and provide art grants for teachers from elementary through high school.
